WHAT IS INSPECTED DURING A WINDSTORM MITIGATION INSPECTION?
1. ROOF DECK ATTACHMENT:

The most common roof deck types are plywood and OSB. By far the most important feature of the roof deck is the attachment to the framing compared to the deck thickness. A nail, which has missed the truss is located and measured. Several trusses or rafters are scanned to determine the spacing of nails.
2. SECONDARY WATER BARRIER:

This is not commonly found in most homes and is very rare. Secondary water resistance (SWR) is a layer of protection that shields the home if the roof covering fails. The two types of SWRs are Self-Adhering Modified Bitumen Underlayment (which is applied to the exterior of all joints) and Foam Seal (which is sprayed on to the underside of your decking).
3. ROOF COVERING:
There are many types of materials used to cover your roof. The most common roof covering materials in Florida are composition shingles and tiles. A key factor in roof covering performance is the method of attachment of the roof covering to the roof deck. 4. ROOF SHAPE (GABLE END BRACING):

Roof shape refers to the geometry of the roof, not the type of roof covering. The end walls of gable roofs extend vertically to the sloping roof line. These gable end walls, if not properly built or braced, have been noted to fail outward due to the negative suctions on the wall.
5. ROOF-TO-WALL CONNECTIONS:

The roof-to-wall connection is another critical safeguard that keeps the roof on the building and acts to transfer the uplift loads into the vertical walls. This connection is crucial to the performance of the building due to the large negative pressures acting on the roof. Proper installation is critical to connector performance.
6. OPENING PROTECTION:
Properly rated protection on your openings will decrease the likelihood of your home being damaged during hurricane strength wind loads.
7. EXTERIOR DOORS AND GARAGE DOORS:

Properly rated protection on your openings will decrease the likely hood of your home being damaged during hurricane strength wind loads. Impact rated doors are identified during the inspection.
